Since this weekend was the 5th annual Open House New York, an event organized to let public access to establishments that aren't open normally, I went out to Queens to check a few out.
First stop was the art deco Astoria Pool, built in 1936. Sitting right in between the Tri-borough and Hell's Gate bridges this olympic size pool takes up a huge space and having the pleasure to ride in the basin was the highlight of the day! (maybe this is what King felt like, prior to leash laws many moons ago as he snuck into the pool)
From there we rolled on to the Build it Green establishment where they recycle everything that one would need to build anything, totally environmental conscious organization.
Even though I have been past the Socrates Sculpture Garden on several occasions, this was my first time in the garden. This park with cool sculptures is literally across the river from where I live. Worth a visit for anyone.
Taking a break at Bohemian Hall, aka Czech Beer garden in beautiful weather is never a bad idea.
We finished at Flux Factory which is an artist community where we got a small tour of their most recent project, it was surprising to find out that they are connected with the Hungarian Cultural Center and that they went to Sziget this summer.
Discovering new things, meeting new people and just having an enjoyable time coupled with the opportunity to experience all this is yet another reason why I still enjoy living in New York.
