It's been almost a week when the initial incident happened on 7th Ave during a Critical Mass ride. A not very smart police officer decided he is going to knock over the next bike rider coming his way. It's not only that his decision was so wrong, but he is lacking some serious luck as there was a tourist video taping what happened.
Soon after the youtube video surfaced papers and blogs started picking up on the news, mostly summed up in New York Times' blog, which also shares the cute story as how some Times Up members managed to buy the footage. It had paid off, by Monday the officer was demoted to a desk position and removed of his badge and gun and is currently under investigation. I also want to mention another debatable coverage that could be found on Animal New York with some surprising details about the Pogan family. One still wonders why a new officer would do such a vicious thing, Mike Green takes an attempt of answering it at his Bike Blog.
Maybe this 1 minute film had started making changes as another footage surfaces of another recent police brutality (warning you, it's not pretty). Also Police Commissioner Ray Kelly yesterday urged citizens to eliminate the
middleman and share their footage with New York's
Finest first on NYPD's website (coming in the next 2 months).
What if this police brutality just wouldn't happen in the first place?
That would be nice. Peace!
