United Offers Free Upgrades for Elite Members
From United's site: United has added another benefit exclusively for elite members (Premier®, Premier Executive® and Premier Executive 1K®) - a new policy that will enable you to upgrade to United First® or United Business® without using miles, certificates or money and allows you to travel in comfort and style.
When you buy a full fare economy electronic ticket (Y or B class*) for travel within the United States, Canada, Hawaii, Caribbean and Central America (Region 1) you may upgrade one (1) class of service, free of charge, without using miles or certificates. Your upgrade will be processed based on your elite status (100 hours before departure for 1K, 72 hours before departure for Premier Executive and 48 hours before departure for Premier) and is subject to availability. If traveling with a companion on the same reservation and itinerary, the companion will clear on your status.
