Florida Airport Brings Business to Region

The SW Florida International Airport, constructed in 1983 and undergoing new terminal construction, has brought more buiness travelers and more businesses to the region. The influx has drawn real esate companies to the area which has, inturn, brought many commercial, retail and light industrial developments. With an if-you-build-it-they-will-come mindset, airport spokesperson Susan Saunders said, "Once you build an airport, people will come out to it. Commercial developers build around it and it creates it own business incubator in the area around the airport. Airport-specific businesses locate around it like freight forwarders and deliverers. Once you put a company close to the airport, then you have restaurant and then housing a little further because it's going to be a place people can work and then you have more shopping and grocery."

The line of thinking seems to have paid off according to 1999 economic figures which claim the airport had a positive influence on $2 billion worth of growth.
